Jail terms and tougher policing to protect exploited migrants being underpaid

The Federal Government will protect workers who are at risk of being exploited with a package of measures that target employers who seek to exploit temporary visa holders and ensure workers can speak up without fear of reprisal. One in six recent migrants to Australia is paid less than the minimum wage.

This exploitation doesn’t just hurt the individual worker, but effectively drives down wages and worsens conditions for all Australian workers.

The federal government will unveil changes that will include $50 million for the Australian Border Force to enforce new laws that will be aimed at cracking down on the exploitation of the nation’s migrant workforce.
